umbrellaCDN is designed to enable content providers and pay-TV operators to select the content delivery network (CDN) that can best address each request for a live or VOD content.
With the umbrellaCDN, Broadpeak aims to help content providers move to a multi-provider, best-of-breed CDN approach. Under this approach, one can: assess several providers; see what CDN is the best fit for each service; and choose the most appropriate CDN. umbrellaCDN handles the rest, ensuring there is a correct load balance between them.
The rules for assigning a CDN to a session are easily defined through a simple graphical interface. Rules are based on parameters such as:
- End-user geolocation
- End-user Internet Service Provider (ISP)
- Group of content (e.g., live/VOD, pay/free, premium/trailer…)
- Time of day
- Type of network
- Quality of service, through feedback provided by an external probe on a location/CDN/NSP combination
